Camera Exposure 


The exposure is the amount of light received by the sensor and is determined by how wide you open the lens diaphragm (aperture) and by how long you keep the sensor exposed (Shutter Speed). Most people depend on the light meter is fin, but if you know to control your exposure you can get some creative and something better picture.

Aperture -  Control the area over which light can enter your camera. 
ISO  Speed - Control the sensitivity of your camera's sensor. 
Shutter Speed - Control the duration of exposure. 


How Correct Exposure is determine ? 


Lights enter through your camera lens then pass through the hole located inside the lens called an aperture and then hits on the film or the digital sensor. Every camera has a light meter, Metering system and an Exposure meter. Light meter measure the amount of ambient or available light and metering system determine and calculate the  correct exposure based on light meter's reading for that particular sense.  Depending on your  camera settings the Exposure meter will display the calculated exposure on a scale (usually on camera's view finder or LCD panel ) with "zero" indicator at the middle. Zero means correct or balance Exposure. Less than "zero" means under Exposure or insufficient light. More than "zero" is over Exposure or too much light. 


Aperture Settings


The camera aperture setting controls the area over which light can pass through your camera lens. It is specified in terms an f-stop value, which can at times be counter intuitive, because the area of the opening increases as the f-stop decreases.




Smaller f number = Bigger opening = Less light in sensor = Shallow Depth of Field 
Larger f number  = Less opening    = Less light in sensor = Deep Depth of Field

If you want your viewers to focus on a certain object in your photograph, you would choose the shallow depth of field because the subject will be focused and the background will be blurry. 

If you want your viewer to focus on the whole photo, you would need deep depth of field.Nothing on the photo is blurred. Everything will be focused. This is great when you are taking a picture of the landscape and you want your viewer to appreciate everything in your photo.
